Changes in soil pH and nutrient extractability after co-applying biochar and paper mill biosolids

چکیده
Acidification and metal mobility may present challenges in soil receiving paper mill biosolids (PB). Co-applying biochar PB could help prevent these issues, but its effect must be assessed. The objective of this 224 d incubation study was to evaluate the amending two acidic soils, a clay sandy loam, with types varying pH (PB1, = 7.80; PB2, 4.51) co-applied three rates (0%, 2.5%, 5% w/w) pine (Pinus strobus L.) on macro- (P, K, Ca, Mg) micronutrients (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn). In both co-applying significantly increased extractable K concentration compared PB-only application, whereas P unamended soil. comparison only, decreased Cu soils Fe loam This showed that can more beneficial agricultural than application alone by supplying nutrients helping toxicity raising pH, especially soils.

متن کاملBiochar-Induced Changes in Soil Hydraulic Conductivity and Dissolved Nutrient Fluxes Constrained by Laboratory Experiments
The addition of charcoal (or biochar) to soil has significant carbon sequestration and agronomic potential, making it important to determine how this potentially large anthropogenic carbon influx will alter ecosystem functions. We used column experiments to quantify how hydrologic and nutrient-retention characteristics of three soil materials differed with biochar amendment. We compared three h...
متن کاملBiochar from Pyrolysis of Biosolids for Nutrient Adsorption and Turfgrass Cultivation.
At water resource recovery facilities, nutrient removal is often required and energy recovery is an ever-increasing goal. Pyrolysis may be a sustainable process for handling wastewater biosolids because energy can be recovered in the py-gas and py-oil. Additionally, the biochar produced has value as a soil conditioner. The objective of this work was to determine if biochar could be used to adso...
متن کاملBiochar and biosolids increase tree growth and improve soil quality for urban landscapes.
Urban soil quality is often degraded and a challenging substrate for trees. This study was conducted to assess the impacts of biochar (BC), biosolids (BS), wood chips (WC), compost (COM), aerated compost tea (ACT), and a nitrogen plus potassium fertilizer (NK) for improving three typical urban soils and tree sapling growth. Across the three soil types, the most significant changes in soil prope...
متن کاملApplying Biochar and Mineral Amendments to Remediate the Chemical Properties of a Saline-Sodic Soil
The present study was intended to improve the chemical properties of a saline-sodic soil using the individual application of alfalfa residue and two biochars produced from sugarcane bagasse and walnut shell, at the weighting ratio of 5%; their concomitant application with gypsum, aluminum sulfate and the mixture of these two chemical amendments was considered. The experiment was conducted in th...
